Tursiops has been doing research into cetaceans around the Balearics for years. Its campaigns focus on studying the behaviour and distribution of the resident population of sperm whales and bottlenose dolphins, as well as possible threats such as noise pollution. The results from the research help to improve the way marine areas are managed. Another fundamental line of Tursiops’ work lies in environmental education and disseminating this natural heritage.
Marilles has backed Tursiops with €10,000 to take advantage of the opportunities and invest in various projects such as installing hydrophones and placing DTAGs on the animals’ backs to record acoustic activity, organising scientific conferences and updating the computer equipment needed to process the sound data collected in the different projects.
